How to Extend the Life of Your Wiper Blades

How to Extend the Life of Your Wiper Blades

Windshield wipers are a crucial component of our cars, providing better visibility when driving in wet weather so we can get to our destination safely. The rubber wiper blades do the heavy lifting of actually displacing the rain or snow so its important that theyre operating properly. Find out how to extend the life of your wiper blades and when its time to replace them below.

How to Make Wiper Blades Last Longer

Regular maintenance and care will help you get the most out of your vehicles wiper blades. Windshield wipers are one of the most visible car parts but we often forget about them until somethings gone wrong like windshield streaking, squeaks, or frozen blades. These simple tips make sure your wipers are always ready for anything Mother Nature has in store.

  1. Clean your windshield and blades regularly: Wiper blades that are free of any dirt or grime will function significantly better on your windshield and last longer. Wipers will naturally get dirty as they clear water and debris off the windshield but continuing to operate with residual contaminants is one of the main causes of premature wiper blade wear.  Periodically your wiper blades with a damp cloth to remove any build-up, especially after driving in dusty conditions. Debris like insects, tree sap, and pollen can easily stick to wiper blades and can be stubborn to remove. Wipers are effective at clearing a windshield while driving but aren’t a great alternative for an old-fashioned deep clean. Taking your vehicle to the car wash is a convenient way to clean off the grime on both your windshield and wiper blades.
  2. Keep your wiper fluid reservoir full: Using wiper blades on a dry windshield just feels wrong. It’s also not good for the lifespan of your wiper blades. Adequate lubrication with wiper fluid not only cleans better, it reduces friction and wear and tear on your wipers. If you want to give your windshield a quick wipe in dry conditions, always spray wiper fluid before you activate the wipers. Windshield wiper fluid is sold in pre-mixed or concentrated solutions, so be sure to check which product you have and how to use it properly.
  3. Lift your wiper blades in freezing temperatures: Boise drivers know that temperatures can drop well below freezing during the winter. Ice can accumulate on the windshield which can freeze the wipers into place. To prevent this, lift the wiper blades or put cardboard or cloth between the windshield and the wiper overnight. The wipersrubber edge can tear when activating a wiper frozen into position.
  4. Prepare your wiper blades for winter: Were most grateful for windshield wipers in the winter season and thats when we need to service them properly. Drivers should use winter wiper fluid that wont freeze in colder temperatures. The National Weather Service reports that around 75% of the Treasure Valley and Boises annual precipitation falls between November and May. So if youve been thinking about swapping your wiper blades for a new pair, nows the time!

When to Replace Your Windshield Wipers

If you’re noticing any irregularities with the wiping pattern of your blades, it may be time to replace the windshield wipers. Large streaks that remain in the main field of view or several streaks across the outer windshield are common symptoms of old wiper blades that should be replaced.

Other signs that you should purchase a new set of wiper blades are screeching or squeaking sounds as the blades move across the windshield. Check the blades for cracked rubber that may occur over time, especially from exposure to intense sun or heat.
